I started flying in Nov. of 1991. I flew on my private until 2005 then started my IFR. I finished it on 3-5-06 from here I'll will go to my multi-instrument commercial/single commercial, and finally my CFI. This seems to be the most cost-effective way to obtain your ratings.
I am writing a book called "Living The Dream" for all the real pilots in the world that fly for the fun of it, and spend most of their flight time in general aviation aircraft.
Here are a couple of my favorite quotes from...

The engine is the heart of an aeroplane, but the pilot is its soul.
— Sir Walter Raleigh
I'll run my hand gently over the wing of a small airplane and say to him, "This plane can teach you more things and give you more gifts than I ever could. It won't get you a better job, a faster car, or a bigger house. But if you treat it with respect and keep your eyes open, it may remind you of some things you used to know — that life is in the moment, joy matters more than money, the world is a beautiful place, and that dreams really, truly are possible." And then, because airplanes speak in a language beyond words, I'll take him up in the evening summer sky and let the airplane show him what I mean.
— Lane Wallace, 'Eyes of a Child,' Flying magazine, February 2000.
I would take an plane over a worthless fast car, that you can't even drive to its maximum performance capability on the streets anyway. Whats the point??
There is a whole lot more to life than sports, fast cars, drinking and working to much. Been there done that. I now put in my 40 Hrs. a week, sometimes less. Then I am done. Time to fly!!
There is no better way to enjoy life.
