I thought i'd throw this small piece of an article to all of u to discuss, its from Sailplane and Gliding and it seems to be quite a heated topic, and im intrigued to see what the feedback for the variety of people on here is like. 'Few of us relish growing old but it is, as the French actor Maurice Chevalier famously observed, preferable to the alternative. When we look at our own club, we can all identify those more mature pilots whose flying puts ours to shame. Yet pilot age is still becoming a topic for heated debate. That isn't just because the gliding population appears to be an ageing one; it's also because recent age-related insurance limitations seem to ignore the wide variation in individuals' abilities.' is this relevant to all flying populations? i've recognised it around our club, but i cant say i agree with all of what the article says.... i look forward to reading the feedback and discussions (if any)

Age in aviation has allways been an issue. Regualtions vary country by country. Certification depends on factors such as type of lisence, endorsements, medical condition. Iīve seen 60 years old pilots at KLM and many other airlines. 70-85 years old private pilots, 65 yers old commercial heli pilots. Insurance companies are also getting fuzzy about this issue. "Come and grow old with me, the best is yet to be" I myself, as a living example, going to be 60 and I am a fully edorsed and certified commercial pilot. So, to make a long story short, If regulations donīt ground you forever, the you have your concience and the deep knowledge of your self, your limitations, your reflexes. It all sums up to be responsable Gab (Capt. Gavilan)

we have recently had an 84 year old go solo at our club... but on the other hand certain older members of the club aren't as good as some of us ounger pilots. but then.... some of our youngsters don't have a lot of sense or skill either... hmm swings and roundabouts here im guessing

Alright ... so maybe it isn't so much that age is a factor, as much as it is experiance, maturity, and attitude. I've only been flying for 8 yrs now, but I feel I'm a better pilot than some I've met who have more experiance, but less maturity and/or a bad attitude. But then there are some who are much older, but far less experianced in flight than I am - I feel I've got the edge over them as well. Though, it seems sort of foolish to think that just one factor determines the ability of a pilot. Age really only holds relevance if it relates to experiance - with which a pilot uses to better her/himself. -Todd ------------------------------------ "Size does matter"

good point Todd! have to say i saw those factors in action today, an older, more experienced failed a regional examination because he took incorrect launch failure actions and ended up having to land in a crop field after having turned too slowly, narrowly avoiding a stall or worse a spin at low level... im not saying its because of his age, im agreeing that its attitude based as this guy obviously got a little to blase with his flying

At my 'local' flight center, from my home town there is an old pilot there, the man is well into his 80's and is a retired ATC controller, he has more Light A/c ratings than anyone i know and generally chacks all the aircraft after their 50hr checks and things. Age isn't a fact, anyone who says it is is lying, as just mentioned, you are as old as you feel. Well said, Kudos to that kid. Tom
